Problem Sending E-mail from Sites

Many sites have contact information where the actual e-mail address of the company or person isn't given, just the name of the person in link form. When I used Earthlink, clicking on said links would have started Outlook Express and I would e-mail from there. But I've been using GMail for several years now because I prefer the webmail format. In any case, since I've made the switch, whenever I click on these types of links, it always tells me that my GMail account is temporarily unavailable. Is there a way around this, where I could read the e-mail address and compose a message in the usual way from the GMail page? Thanks.

Depending on the OS you are using. If it's XP go to control Pannel. Type I to internet options or get their. In their shift tab over to programs and make Gmail the default. That is off the top of my head, but hopefully you understand. If not say so and I'll post it step by step. You click the link on the site then your G should open s normal.

I completely understood the directions. But GMail is a website not a program. It's mail from Google.

Yes, but Gmail can be made a primary email client just like hotmail, MSN Yahoo and these are not programs either. Maybe send Gmail support an email for directions?

Oh wow! I didn't know that. Cool! I'll look into this. It would make things so much easier!

I found a nice page on how to set GMail as the default in Firefox and for the computer.

http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2009/06/set-gmail-as-default-email-client-in.html

The instructions were very clear but they didn't work for me. I tried it both ways, setting Firefox to use GMail and then the Notifier. I even restarted the browser but no luck. I didn't reboot but I'm not sure if that would help. For what it's worth, I'm using Firefox version 3.6.13.

You didn't ask the people at Gmail, nor did you read the instructions on the Gmail site. Try it!

Okay I'll relent. Vamsi Kiran is using Firefox as his default web browser but when he clicks some email hyperlink (mailto:) on the web, IE opens up with the Yahoo! Mail homepage.

Vamsi would like to see the GMail compose window open up inside Firefox (not Internet Explorer) when he clicks any email hyperlink on web pages.

Download the free Google Talk chat application and open the options dialog. You'll see a general setting that says "Open GMail When I click on Email Links"
- select that and exit.

gmail default email program

This will set Gmail as your default mailto: handler. This means that when you click on any hyperlinked email address, a Gmail compose window will open in
your default web browser. The To: address field will be prepopulated with email address.

Their you go.

This might be a bit easier to do.
Do you read and write your emails in Gmail? And does Gmail come up when you click an email address on a web site? Do you wish it would?
If you use the right operating system, a Gmail notifier can help you make Gmail your default email program — a new Gmail message in your preferred browser will come up when you click an email link.

Make Gmail Your Default Email Program
To set Gmail as your default email program:

Windows

•Make sure Gmail Notifier is installed.
•Click on the Gmail Notifier icon in the Windows system tray with the right mouse button.
•Select Options from the menu.
•Make sure Use Gmail for internet mailto: links is checked.
•Click OK.
Unfortunately, you cannot set the Gmail web interface as your default email program in Windows Vista. You can set up Gmail in an email program such as Windows Mail, though, and thus send from your Gmail address by default.
Now you'll only need to google the Gmail notifier.

I actually have the GMail Notifier installed but can't find it in the system tray. But I know it's working because I get sound alerts when new messages come in. From what I remember, it's menus aren't really accessible but I could be wrong. I'll see if I can find it in programs or something. This really would make things much easier. If not, then I'll try Google Talk. But is that accessible?

Post 11 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 21-Dec-2010 16:42:37

Google talk won't help with email. Look for the notifier under your programs.

Post 12 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Tuesday, 21-Dec-2010 19:13:19

This is completely ridiculous. I found the GMail Notifier in programs but when I hit enter on it, it just asked me if I wanted to connect. I was already connected but hit okay and after that, it dissappeared. It doesn't show up in my tray at all. I then went back to programs and tried a context menu on notify.exe and nothing happened. There's no way for me to get into options or anything. I've tried setting Firefox to use both GMail and GMail Notifier for mail to links but neither of those options made a difference. I either need to create a separate e-mail account specifically for e-mailing pages like this, so that I can use Outlook Express or I'll see if the actual code or url of the page has the e-mail address in it. This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen.

Opa! Got it! I go to view in Firefox and then to page source and it shows me the actual mail-to links! Yes!

Even more amazing when certain people aren't sarcastic!

Post 16 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 22-Dec-2010 0:33:01

Sorry I did forget to suggest that. Smile. Glad you have it now. I don't personally use it, so just did some research for you. Have fun.

Post 17 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Wednesday, 22-Dec-2010 0:38:10

No problem. *smile* Thanks for the suggestions in any case. I was thinking of checking the code but wasn't sure if it would work. At least now I can copy the address and paste it into the compose box in GMail.

Post 18 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 22-Dec-2010 2:10:49

The email address on the website you are emailing will already bge in the compose box. You just have to type your message. It opens your client, or should, but however you do it you got it going on now.

Post 19 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Wednesday, 22-Dec-2010 7:19:03

Mine is basically a work-around. I just have it expose the html code of the page and take the address that way. It's not as convenient as what you're suggesting, but as you said, it works. lol

sarcasm is great. learn to live a little.

I was being totally serious this whole time. I think she was as well, but where did I miss?

Post 22 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Monday, 03-Jan-2011 22:29:29

That comment wasn't meant for you. Sorry for the confusion. I also think that I realised something and have been explaining it incorrectly. It does open another browser window when I enter on a link. So it seems to be trying to connect with GMail. But it always says that my account is unavailable. Out of curiosity, I decided to check the link once after trying this, and the e-mail address that it's trying to send to is there. So it will say mailto: example@provider.com right there in the url. So I've just been copying out the actual addresses, going to compose and then pasting them in the edit box. It's much easier than exposing the code of the page, but I still don't know why GMail is not being properly activated.

Post 23 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2011 23:55:11

If it goes to the next page and you see that address that is Gmail. It is the email, so you write your message their. That is what I meant by the to field being already populated. You find the edit filed or the compose field and write your message, then you do exactly what you do to send your message. Mostly that is alt S. A while back MSN had a client that would go to the page to type the message, but the compose field was not accessible, but I understand Gmail is suppose to be completely accessible, So the next time that happends check it out.

I forgot to say that MSN Hotmail. Yahoo, and all others have fixed that issue as well. I use Hotmail, and MMSN and it works smoothly. I have used Yahoo as well with the same results, so Gmail is probably exactly the same.

Post 25 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Wednesday, 05-Jan-2011 0:43:20

No. The page always gives me an error, stating that my GMail account isn't available. There are no normal links on the page for to, cc, bcc, subject, body of text etc. I've never had problems reading the address in the compose box. But here, the only ray I can read it is by looking at the url.

Post 26 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 05-Jan-2011 20:25:17

Interesting. I'm going to ask some other Gmail users and tell you what I learn.

Post 27 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Wednesday, 05-Jan-2011 20:28:47

Thanks. I'm quite curious about this.

Post 28 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 06-Jan-2011 19:59:02

So far I have been told it works as I think it should. I have probably been in arror in assuming it might as well for you. 1. I forgot to ask if you are using Jaws, or Window Eyes, because if not that might be the reason you have it fixed, but still can not see the edit boxes. You can paste the address you say from the to field and you say the page opens. 2. Next is the machine you are trying to do this with have an updated copy of Windows, and have you not removed parts of it, due to what you call bloat ware? I'm not trying to be funny, just wanting to understand why it doesn't work for you. 3. Does anyone else on the Zone here use NVDA and Fire Fox, and Gmail that might shed some light on this? I am as she is interested?

Post 29 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Thursday, 06-Jan-2011 20:09:50

I'm using NVDA. There is no to field. I have to go to GMail and to the compose link to see all the proper fields. There are no boxes when I click on a link because it gives me an error message. Here's what it says.

"Gmail by Google

Temporary Error (404)

We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest trying again in a few minutes.

If the issue persists, please visit the Gmail Help Center »
Try Again Sign Out

Show Detailed Technical Info"

Here's what it says when I click that link.

"Numeric Code: 7"

That's it. The only other things on the page below that are

"©2008 Google - Gmail Home - Privacy Policy - Program Policies - Terms of Use - Google Home"

All of those, as well as the Gmail link at the top act normally. Just to clarify, I didn't delete anything on this laptop. At least, not that I can recall. But if I did, it wasn't anything having to do with Windows, probably just IBM things. Still, I don't remember even doing that. No other functions in Firefox give me errors like this and I'm able to use my GMail account correctly in all other respects.

Post 30 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 06-Jan-2011 20:29:30

I read back and you had said you followed the instructions and it was working, but you could still not see the edit fields, or I thought that was what you ment. Now that you have the message why not ask Gmail by sending them that info?

Post 31 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Thursday, 06-Jan-2011 22:29:44

my thoughts exactly.
